Mrs. Doris E. Ellis, 88, formerly of DeWitt, Iowa, died Friday evening, September 1, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society, Davenport.

Doris Evelyn Ellis was born January 18, 1929, in Postville, Iowa, to the late Alwin and Charlotte (Peck) Walby. She was a graduate of Postville High School and received a teaching degree from Marycrest College, Davenport.  Doris taught with her mother in a one-room school house following graduation from high school.  She married Lyle Ellis March 16, 1947 in Waukon.  The couple resided in Postville until moving to DeWitt in 1957.  Doris taught at St. Joseph Catholic School, DeWitt until retirement.  Her husband preceded her in death July 29, 2009.

 She was an active member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, DeWitt, volunteered for community projects and participated in the Crop Walk for many years.  Doris enjoyed cooking, crocheting and working crossword puzzles and loved traveling, wintering in Texas and spending time with her family. She loved watching her boys sporting events and was an avid Hawkeye fan.

Surviving are sons, Larry (Estell) Ellis of Corpus Christi, Texas, Jason (Trish) Ellis of Bettendorf, Kevin Ellis of Davenport and Kent (Donna) Ellis of Coralville; grandchildren, Colleen (James) Alaniz, Erik (Clarissa) Ellis, Jena (Brian) Barch, Camden Ellis, Kendra Ellis, Lindsay Ellis, Kyle (Sasha) Ellis, Tiffany (Michael) Schmidt and Carolyn Ellis; great-grandchildren, Austin Alaniz, Greysen Alaniz, Camron Ellis, Gavin Ellis, Carter Schmidt, Jude Barch and Anson Barch; nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark Ellis and siblings, Dorothy Waters, Lester Walby and Leland Walby.

The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 5, 2017.  A service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, DeWitt.  Burial will be at Frankville Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, September 7, 2017.

Pallbearers will be Kyle Ellis, Michael Schmidt, Camden Ellis, Brian Barch, Erik Ellis and James Alaniz.
