Walter L. Humphrey, 78, of Grand Mound, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 13, 2024, in his home, due to heart failure.
Walter Lee Humphrey was born July 12, 1945, in East Windham, New York, to Winston and Eleanor Humphrey. After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving during peace time. Walt worked for Hall Ski Lift. After the death of his parents, he moved to Watertown, New York, and worked over 25 years for Car Freshner Corp. and was instrumental in establishing the plant in DeWitt. While working there he met the love of his life, Phyllis McGimpsey. They married in 1996. Walt retired from Car Freshner in 2006, and then worked for Central DeWitt Community School Transportation Department.
Walt loved trains and collected many models. He also enjoyed antiquing and woodworking. He could fix and fabricate anything!
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis “PJ”; step-children, Kim (Bill) DeSchepper of Davenport, Bill (Penny) McGimpsey of DeWitt, and Kelly (Mark) Rathje of McCausland; 5 step-grandchildren, 5 step-great-grandchildren; and a cousin, Carolyn of Maine.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and step-grandchildren, Kris and Will.
In keeping with Walt’s wishes, no services will be held.
