Lois DeJoode, 98, of DeWitt, formerly of St. Peters, Missouri and Pleasantville, Iowa, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at Fieldstone of DeWitt.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 20, at Schultz Funeral Home, with visitation one hour prior.
Lois Alma Brockmeyer was born March 15, 1926, to John and Clara (Kuntz) Brockmeyer in Colesburg, Iowa. After graduating from Lime Springs High School, Lois attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette for one year. She then joined the United States Cadette Nursing Corps at Kahler Nursing School in Rochester, Minnesota. Lois worked as a Registered Nurse at the Veterans Hospital in Knoxville, Iowa. She was married to William DeJoode, with whom she had four children, they later divorced. Lois then returned to work at the Veterans Hospital, retiring after 23 years of service.
While living in Pleasantville, Lois was a member of St. Paul’s Methodist Church, helped start the Emergency Services/Rescue Squad, was a charter member of the Pleasantville Recreation Area, and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as treasurer for many years. During retirement, Lois volunteered for Hospice of Central Iowa. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, attending her children’s activities, playing cards, and listening to music.
Lois is survived by her children, Arnold (Pat) DeJoode of Cedar Falls, Linda (Jeff) Nelson of LeClaire, Karen DeJoode of Anamosa, and Donna (Ron) Hawkins of St. Peters, Missouri; grandchildren, Troy (Michelle) DeJoode, Adam DeJoode, Matthew (Jennipher) Hawkins, and Megan (J.T.) Barras; 6 great-grandchildren, Chase, Jack, and Jules DeJoode, and Owen, Winora, and Evalynn Hawkins.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Wilma (Harmon) Hinners, and Zeida (Robert) Clark, and great-grandchildren, Carson and Claire DeJoode.
