William Frank Kirstein

Mr. William Frank Kirstein, 93, formerly of Grand Mound, Iowa, died Wednesday evening, August 30, 2017, at Westview Care Center, Indianola.

William “Bill” Kirstein was born February 18, 1924, in Montpelier, Iowa, to Paul and Anna Kirstein. He attended Clarence schools and served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, spending part of that time in Guam. 60 years after serving his country, he was privileged to travel on the QC Honor Flight with his grandson, a fellow Marine, to see the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C.  Bill married Evelyn Meyer on December 5, 1948. They made their home in Wheatland, Iowa, where he became a lifelong farmer. Bill was a member of the Wheatland American Legion and was proud to carry the American flag in many parades. He enjoyed sitting outside in his lawn chair, listening to music, and watching baseball games – his favorite team was whoever was winning.

Surviving are his four children, Barb (Ron) Ekstrom of Palmyra, Iowa, Bill Kirstein of Moorhead, Minnesota, Gina (John) Rockrohr of Tualatin, Oregon, and Lisa Gray of Norwalk, Iowa; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his brother Paul (Linda) Kirstein of Mechanicsville, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Elizabeth Wenndt, and his loving wife of nearly 67 years, Evelyn.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound from 10 until 11:45 a.m. Thursday, September 7, 2017, with a service at 12 noon in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Lowden.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials are asked to be designated to your local Disabled American Veterans Organization.
