Virginette "Virg" (Minnaert) Barnes
March 16, 1925 ~ October 3, 2017 (age 92) 92 Years OldVirginette Florence “Virg” Barnes, 92, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at Westwing Place, DeWitt.
Mrs. Barnes was born Virginette Florence Minnaert on March 16, 1925, to Camiel and Lillian (Dierickx) Minnaert in Toronto, Iowa. Virg graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in Davenport. She married Richard “Dick” Barnes on May 22, 1946, at St. James Church in Toronto. The couple resided in Grand Mound until starting Barnes Foodland in 1949 in DeWitt. Dick preceded her in death on July 16, 1979.
She was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she served on the Altar and Rosary Society. She was known and admired for the afghans she knitted for parish festivals and her grandchildren.
Virg is survived by her children, Anita (Bob) Boenig of Danville, California, William Barnes of DeWitt, Michael (Cindy) Barnes of DeWitt, Pamela (Mike) Burke of Omaha, Nebraska, Patrick (Joyce) Barnes of DeWitt, Gregory (Sheri) Barnes of DeWitt, Brian (Kathy) Barnes of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Darlene (Lowell) Rothbart, Yvonne (Dick) Velde, and Rosemary Minnaert.
Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 3:30, Friday, October 6, 2017, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 7, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, with the Rev. Fr. H. Robert Harness officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
