Shirley Ann (Finn) Ostert
July 9, 1937 ~ November 19, 2016 (age 79) 79 Years OldShirley Ann Ostert, 79, of DeWitt, Iowa, died early Saturday morning, November 19, 2016, at Trinity Medical Center, Bettendorf.
She was born July 9, 1937, in Cedar Rapids to Leo and Annette (Hughes) Finn. Shirley graduated from St. Mary's High School in Cascade. On July 21, 1956, Shirley was united in marriage to Darrell Raymond Ostert at St. Peter Catholic Church at Temple Hill. The couple resided in DeWitt where they raised their family. In addition to being a homemaker, Shirley worked at Ennis Business Forms DeWitt for over 30 years until retirement. She also worked for Seventh Avenue in DeWitt. Her husband preceded her in death May 20, 2009.
Shirley was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and Choir. She also belonged to the Red Hat Society and a card club. Shirley enjoyed flowers and gardening, fishing, bird watching; especially humming birds and cardinals and an occasional trip to the river boat. She was an excellent cook and loved time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Shirley was very proud of her Irish heritage, as she was full blooded Irish.
She is survived by her children, Cindy (Kevin) Michels of Davenport, Sue (Doug Wagg) Thornton of Letts, Kathy (Dwayne) Hartz of DeWitt, Don (Brandi) Ostert of Marquette and Tim (Lisa) Ostert of DeWitt; grandchildren, Magen (Jamie) Gillespie-Lange, Chelcey (Nick Owens) Thompson, Jadyn Michels, Amanda (Jason) Thornton-Wagner, Shawn (Bethany) Thornton, Travis (Patti) Thornton, Wesley Thornton, Jr., Kayla (Kyle) Alberding, Christopher Thornton, Brianna Thornton, Tyler (Stephanie Foust) Hartz, Ashley (Aaron) Lacey, Aubrey (Kyle) Hanrahan, Collin Ostert, Michael Ostert, Gabrielle Ostert, Emily Ostert, Natalie Payne, Jared Payne and Isabelle Ostert; great-grandchildren, Gwendolyn, Alex, Haleigh, Emma, Jacob, Payton, Nicholas, Taylor, Zachary, Rylee, Payton, Cole, Brady, Tinley, Lucas, Ben, Dylan and Henry; nieces and nephews.
Preceding Shirley in death in addition to her husband were an infant son, Henry Leo; a son, Dennis; a granddaughter, Gwendolyn Lange; a great-grandson, Dennis Jacob Lange; her parents and siblings, Gerry Della Rosa, Don Finn, Willie Finn, Kenny Finn and Patsy Adler.
The family will receive friends at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 25, 2016, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 26, 2016, in the church with the Rev. Fr. Paul Connolly presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and granddaughters will serve as honorary pallbearers.
