Richard Victor Hughes
October 7, 1932 ~ January 9, 2017 (age 84) 84 Years OldRichard Victor Hughes, 84, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away at home on Monday, January 9, 2017.
Richard was born October 7, 1932, to Michael and Wilma (Hirzsiefen) Hughes in DeWitt. After graduating from Grand Mound High School he worked at the Rock Island Arsenal until being drafted into the Army where he served 16 months in Korea. Richard was united in marriage to Madonna Claeys on July 6, 1974. He retired from the Arsenal after 36 years and went on to work as custodian for St. Joseph Catholic School.
Richard was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, the Grand Mound American Legion post #622 where he served as commander. He enjoyed water-skiing, NASCAR and local stock car racing, and collecting and building 1/64 scale model trucks, tractors and semis.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years Madonna; children Monica (Jim) Allen of Davenport, Philip Hughes of DeWitt, Patrick (Dorothy) Hughes of Low Moor, Molly (Tony) Otto of DeWitt; granddaughters, Violet and Laurel Allen; siblings, Hubert Hughes, Kathryn Ann (Bill) Goddard, and brother-in-law, William Niels; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister Mary, a sister Rosalie Niels, and sister-in-law Dorothy Hughes.
Visitation will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 12, 2017, with a Vigil Service following. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 13, 2017, in the church. Burial and military rites will follow in the church cemetery.
