Matt Stender, 93, of Moline, Illinois, formerly of Grand Mound, Iowa, died Friday evening, April 7, 2017, at Wheatland Manor.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at St Joseph's Catholic Church in DeWitt, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Grand Mound. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph's School or for masses.

Matthias John Stender was born February 13, 1924, in rural Grand Mound, Iowa to Matthias and Nora (Meyer) Stender. He graduated from Welton High School in 1941. Matt was united in marriage to Mary Therese Ranson on November 25, 1948, at Saints Philip and James Catholic Church, Grand Mound.  The couple farmed and raised their family near Grand Mound.  He was employed by and retired from the Davenport Postal Service. He was later employed part-time by the Rock Island Bank and Trust.  Mary preceded him in death on June 30, 2014.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, and later of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, Illinois. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Matt was an avid Hawkeye and White Sox fan.

He will be lovingly remembered by sons, Kevin of Las Vegas, Nevada, Craig (Margot) of Littleton, Colorado, Loren of Lost Nation, Iowa, and daughter, Mary Renee Stender of Moline, Illinois; grandchildren, Cole and Jesse Stender of Colorado, and Breanna, Reid, and Nicholas Stender of Nevada; a sister, Shirley Saladino of Irmo, South Carolina; nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Mary, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Madge (Marvin) Knutsen, and June (Luvern) Knutsen, and a brother-in-law, Francis Saladino.
