Mr. LaVerne E. Ehlers, 86, formerly of Long Grove, Iowa, died peacefully Monday afternoon, July 6, 2015 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa.

LaVerne Ernest Ehlers was born on the family farm, August 20, 1928, at rural Long Grove.  He was one of five children born to Ernest and Emilie (Boehme) Ehlers.  He attended Walnut Grove School and worked on the family farm early in life.  LaVerne served in the Army during the Korean Era, receiving the Purple Heart.  Upon being honorably discharged he returned to farming with his father.  LaVerne also did carpentry work with his father.  In retirement he continued to live at rural Long Grove until moving to Clinton, Iowa, several years ago to reside with his niece, Cindy.

He enjoyed visiting with people who often termed him the "old timer" for his recalling of the "good old days".  LaVerne also enjoyed horses and could also be found driving ponies in area parades.  It was not uncommon to find LaVerne at auctions of which he greatly enjoyed.  He was a proud and longtime member of the Donahue American Legions Post #532.

Surviving are sisters, Mrs. Thelma Goldensoph of Clinton and Mrs. Marion Nichols of Moline, Illinois; nieces and nephews including, Cindy Mitchell, Leon Goldensoph, Paula Carter, Polly (Jim) Layne, Jim (Deb) Goldensoph and Tom (Ileen) Goldensoph; other relatives and friends.

Preceding LaVerne in death were his parents, a sister, Rosemary Ehlers and a brother, Marvin Ehlers.

The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2015.  A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home.  Interment and military rites will take place at Mt. Joy Cemetery in Parkview, Iowa.
