June Aretta Fowlkes, 83, of DeWitt, Iowa, died early Sunday morning, November 20, 2016, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

June was born April 24, 1933, to William and Esther (Howard) Merriman in Como, Mississippi. She was united in marriage to Edward J. Fowlkes on July 26, 1951, in Senatobia, Mississippi. The couple resided in the Chicago area until 1976, when they moved to DeWitt. She worked as a seamstress for many years and later worked at the DeWitt hospital for 20 years. Ed preceded her in death on August 8, 2014.

June had a very kind and caring heart and a zest for life. She loved reading, gardening, coloring, collecting angels, listening to music, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Dan (Linda) Fowlkes of Davenport, Carl (June) Fowlkes of Lisle, Illinois, Tom Fowlkes of DeWitt, Christie (Mike) Grosshans of Houston Texas, Kim (Sam) Means of Moline, Illinois; 10 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; siblings, Renda (Will) McCalligan, William (Diane) Merriman, and Atha Stacey; nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

The family will greet visitors from 10:00 until 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt.  A Memorial Service will follow at 12:00 noon, at the funeral home.  Pastor Dianne Prichard will officiate.  Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery at a later date.

Donations may be made to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House for the kindness and compassion shown to June during her stay.
