Joan Marie Kaufman

Joan M. (Mrs. Daniel) Kaufman, 88, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Friday evening, January 19, 2018, at home.

Mrs. Kaufman, the former Joan Marie Niemann was born December 2, 1929, at Mt. Joy in Scott County to the late Harry and Malinda (Gremmels) Niemann.  She attended Country School at rural DeWitt.  Joan married Daniel B. Kaufman at the Atlanta General Depot in Atlanta, Georgia, August 4, 1951.  The couple resided in DeWitt where they raised their son and daughter.  Joan worked at various area businesses including the Cookie Factory in Davenport, Keiss' Dime Store, DeWitt Calendar Factory, Fairyland, Iowa Mutual, Burpee Seed Company and retired from Ekstrand Elementary School as a cook.  

She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church of DeWitt where she taught Sunday School.  Joan was also a member of the DeWitt American Legion Auxiliary.  She always had a huge flower and vegetable garden.  Joan was an avid seamstress and bread maker who won Best of Show for her bread making at the Clinton County Fair.  Overall, Joan was a hard working wife and mother.  She loved attending her grandkids sporting events and concerts and adored and was proud of each of them.  Joan enjoyed dancing.  She and Danny were involved with the Cob City Hobblers Square Dancing Club of Dixon and the DeWitt Tower Twirlers.  Joan also enjoyed playing cards, painting ceramics and crocheting.

Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Danny; children, Roger (Cheryl) Kaufman of DeWitt and Connie (Roger) Burzlaff of Grand Mound; grandchildren, Karna (Chris) Reicks, Kerry (Amber) Burzlaff and Kendra (B.J.) Yaddof; great-grandchildren, Kade, Kallie and Keaton Burzlaff, Aidan and Owen Yaddof and Ella Reicks; siblings, Arlene Scorpil of Durant and Rollie (Liz) Niemann of DeWitt; a sister-in-law, Gloria Kaufman of Maquoketa; many nieces and nephews.

Joan was also preceded in death by her step-father, Albert Kruse; sisters, Evelyn (Wilmer) Marxen, Hazel (Donnie) Bousselot and Loretta (Arnold) Busch and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Leila (Henry) Petersen, Gladys (Clayton) Mickelson, LaVern Kaufman and Joe Scorpil.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2018.  A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 25, 2018, at the United Methodist Church, DeWitt with the Rev. Tom Boomershine officiating.  Burial will be at Clinton Lawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Kerry Burzlaff, B.J. Yaddof, Chris Reicks, Al Roseland, Kurt Cousins and Kendall Claeys.
