Jane Reed, 69, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Tuesday morning, July 4, 2017, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.  

Jane was born Martha Jane Thomas on August 5, 1947, in Iowa City to Earl and Eloise (Countryman) Thomas.  She was a 1966 graduate of Tipton High School and graduated in 1969 from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in education.  Prior to her marriage, Jane taught at Pleasant Valley Elementary School.   She married Joe Reed April 20, 1974, at St. Anne Catholic Church, Welton.  They later divorced.  In addition to raising her daughters, Jane taught at area schools until retiring from Central Community Middle School in 2010.  

She loved tending her flower beds, reading, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, feeding the birds and spending time with family.

Surviving are daughters, Sarah Reed of Delmar, Melissa (Mark) Miller of Preston and Teresa (Rodne) Wendt of Stanwood; grandchildren, Audrey, Cassidy, Luke and Tate Schlimmer, Sydney, James and Hope Miller and Brody and Justin Wendt; siblings, Sam (Candace) Thomas of Naperville, Illinois, Joe (Jean) Thomas of Platteville, Wisconsin, Susan (Tom) Mobbley of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mike (Sue) Thomas of McGregor and Mark Thomas of Marshalltown; many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Jane in death were her parents.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2017.  A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home.  Interment will be at the Tipton Masonic Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House or DeWitt Public Library.
