Mr. Harold S. Johnson, 89, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Monday evening, November 16, 2015 at Westwing Place, DeWitt.

Harold Sterling Johnson was born January 22, 1926, in Marshall, Wisconsin, to John and Evelyn (Chadwick) Johnson.  He was a 1944 graduate of Marshall High School.  Harold served in the Army during World War II.  Upon his honorable discharge, he studied at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville earning a Bachelor of Science degree. Harold furthered his studies at the University of Iowa, receiving a Master of Science degree.   He began his teaching career and on August 3, 1952, married Delores Colleen Robinson in Platteville, Wisconsin.  Harold taught earth science for 36 years, 21 of those years in the DeWitt school system.  The couple enjoyed over 50 years of marriage.  Delores preceded Harold in death on January 30, 2003.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, DeWitt, and the Eugene McManus American Legion Post #238. Harold was an avid walker and also enjoyed biking, hunting, reading, listening to music, attending antique tractors shows and spending time with his family.  He was the epitome of a gentleman.  Even in death, Harold’s kindness continues as an anatomical donor of his body for scientific research at the University of Iowa.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Sylvia and Dennis Dingbaum and Ellen and Stephen Keller of Park View, Iowa; grandchildren, Lynette (Chris Goff) Burmeister, Derek Dingbaum, Todd Dingbaum, Tami Paisley, Tobey Dingbaum, Kristin (Levi) Berkhoff, and Justin (Echo) Keller; great-grandchildren, Lauren, Drew and Jaxson; siblings, Stanley of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Ted (Della) of Marshall, Evelyn “Bunny” Schuhmacher of Strawberry Point, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Delores, Harold was preceded in death by a son, Matthew; a sister, Janice Weihert and brothers, Adelbert, Lawrence, Charles and Willard.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the United Methodist Church, DeWitt, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. Monday, November 23rd.  A service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday in the church. Military Rites will follow at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church, DeWitt or the DeWitt Referral Center.
