Mr. H. Walter Zimmermann, 86, of rural Lost Nation, Iowa, died Thursday afternoon, March 2, 2017, at Maquoketa Care Center.

He was born October 15, 1930, in Lowenstedt, Germany, to August and Marie (Thomsen) Zimmermann.  Walter was educated in German schools and learned the trade of gardner.  He immigrated to the United States on his 25th birthday.  Walter first came to Nebraska, then Clinton County. He married Angela Eden on February 18, 1961, in Grand Mound. The couple farmed at rural Bryant, then north of Maquoketa later settling south of Lost Nation.  Walter milked up to 38 Holstein cows.  For 16 years Walter  grew vegetables and with the help of his wife, sold produce at the Mississippi Valley Growers Association in Davenport.  He was known of the "best" tomatoes at the market.

He enjoyed playing Solitare, 500 with his children and Skat and Doppelkopef with his longtime friends.  Walter loved to be the "dog" during deer hunting season and he loved the timber.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Angela; children, Gretchen (Gary Porter) Zimmermann of Grinnell, Elaine Zimmermann of Marion, Amy Zimmermann of Cedar Rapids, Paul Zimmermann of Kellogg and Denise (Brandon Blietz) Zimmermann of Iowa City, Roger (Nicole) Zimmermann of Lincoln, Nebraska; grandchildren, Adrian Zimmermann, Kendra Blietz, Riley Zimmermann, and Hanna, Ryan, Piper and Luke Zimmermann; sisters, Greta Ipsen of Germany, Marielene Isacson of Sweden; brothers, Otto, Herman and Uwe; cousins, Fred, Herb and Pete Friedrichsen of the United States; numerous nieces and nephews of Germany and Sweden.

Preceding Walter in death were his brothers, Albert, Willi, Adolf, August and Johann all of Germany.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2017.  A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2017, in the funeral home with Pastor Denise Anderberg officiating.  Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Calamus.  In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the Lost Nation First Responders.
