Mr. Guenther F Schnack, 85, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away Thursday evening, October 20, 2016, at The Alverno, Clinton in the loving presence of his family, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Guenther Frederick Schnack was born October 22, 1930, in Clinton to John P. and Elsie (Schroeder) Schnack.  He was a graduate of DeWitt High School and while in high school, earned a state record in track for the ½ mile run, which he held for many years. He was united in marriage to the former Fonda Casad on November 18, 1951, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt.  Guenther served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean Era. Guenther farmed at rural DeWitt for many years.  He also was employed by Farm Service for 24 years and worked at the Low Moor Stock Yards and Remington Seed. 

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, serving on the church council and Elder, was a charter member of the Low Moor Lions Club, and member of Farm Bureau, Camanche VFW, and the DeWitt American Legion Post.  Guenther enjoyed coin collecting, fundraising for the Lions and watching the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes.  He loved his German Heritage, keeping up with his grandchildren’s activities and attending Schnack family reunions.

Surviving are Fonda Schnack of DeWitt; children, Darla (Patrick) Brown of Camanche, Danita (Mark Mataya) Hythecker of DeWitt, Dawn (Jeff) Schuetzle of Clinton and David (Deb) Schnack of Milford, Nebraska; grandchildren, Troy (Denise) Hythecker, Eric (Bethany) Hythecker, Jed (Andi) Hythecker, Jeremy (Cindy) Hythecker, Sarah (Noah) Moran, Allison (Doug) Schultz, Ryan (Ashley Geltz) Schuetzle, Emily Schuetzle, Christina (Jeremy McIntyre) Graham and Zachary (Diana) Graham, Katie (Brandon) Wergin, Kolten Schnack, K’lena Schnack; great-grandchildren, Caleb and Leah Hythecker, Eli, Noelle and Joyanna Hythecker, Hayden and Jack Hythecker, Dillon Daniels, Sophie and Lillie Schultz and Aliyah, Keyarah and Karli Graham, Hawk McIntyre and Creighton Wergin; siblings, Dorothy Bean, Liz (Roland) Nieman and John Schnack all of DeWitt; nieces, nephews, many friends and co-workers.

Preceding Guenther in death were his parents, a daughter, Darcey Graham and a son-in-law, Mark Hythecker.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 24, 2016.  A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt with the Rev. Steven Anderson officiating.  Burial and military rites will be at Clinton Lawn Cemetery.  A luncheon and time of sharing will be held in Grace Hall following the cemetery services.  Memorials are suggested to Low Moor Lions Club.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
