Mrs. Gladys M. Johnston, 83, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Saturday afternoon, December 31, 2016, in the comfort of her home.

Mrs. Johnston, the former Gladys Mae Anderson was born April 10, 1933 in Dubuque, Iowa, to Andrew and Minnie (Jackson) Anderson.  She married Lyle Johnston June 30, 1950, in Dubuque.  The couple settled in DeWitt where they raised their family as well as owned and operated the Town Coffee Shop.  In addition to being a homemaker, Gladys also was employed as a cook in the Deli at Barnes Foodland for 11 years, until retirement in 1995.  Her husband preceded her in death on January 7, 2006.

She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church, DeWitt and the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary.   Gladys was an excellent cook and loved her family dearly.

Surviving are children, James (Darlene) Johnston of DeWitt, Linda (Dick) Dierks of Winnebago, Illinois, David (Madonna) Johnston of DeWitt, Diane (Ray) Chlebicki of Lakewood, Illinois, Janet Johnston of DeWitt and Mark (Debbie) Johnston of Watertown, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Andrew (Sarah) Johnston, Brad (Megan) Dierks, Amanda (Cesar) Maestas, Miranda Witzig, Michael (Emily) Johnston, Mitchell (Melissa) Johnston, Samantha Chlebicki, Cory Chlebicki, Jared Johnston and Tyler Johnston; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Alvin “Bud”, Merlin, Bill, Don and Ralph and a sister, Dorothy.

The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2017.  A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 5, 2017, at the United Methodist Church, DeWitt.  Burial will be at Clinton Lawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Andy Johnston, Brad Dierks, Michael Johnston, Mitchell Johnston, Cory Chlebicki and Cesar Maestas.
