Douglas C. Henning, 79, of Calamus, Iowa, died Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at Select Specialty Hospital in Davenport.

Doug was born June 3, 1937, to Milton and Audrey (Petersen) Henning, in Calamus. After graduating from Calamus High School he attended the University of Iowa where he played baseball. He was united in marriage to Meryne Mueller on June 3, 1957, at Faith Lutheran Church in Calamus. Doug played in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system in the 1958 season. The couple farmed in the Calamus area until retiring in 1999.

Doug was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. He was also a charter member of the Wapsi Oaks Country Club and the Calamus Lions Club. He played semi-pro baseball for Calamus for many years and later coached both of his sons’ little league teams. He was a Hawkeye fan, and a lifetime Cardinal fan, attending many games, including one World Series. He enjoyed being with family and friends, playing cards (Sheepshead), fishing (including many trips to Canada), and attending as many of his kids’ and grandkids’ sporting events as possible.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Meryne; children, Daryl (Doreen) Henning of Calamus, Karna (Jeff) Wieck of Coralville, and Kevin (Jolene) Henning of DeWitt; grandchildren, Blaine (Kayla) Henning, Ashley (Troy) Steffens, Justin (Laura) Wieck, Leah Wieck, Abigail (Brent) Yotty, Rachel Henning, and Grant Henning; great-grandchildren, Jalen, Jackson, Jordan, Anya, Oscar, Austin, Brenna, Carter, McClain, Cameron, Tanner, and Tysen; siblings, Janelle (Warne) Ramsey, Dennis (Kay) Henning, Craig (Sandy) Henning, Denice (Joe) Birdwell; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Brenda Aiken, and nephews, David and Mark Ramsey, and Jason Birdwell.

Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 26th at Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 27, 2016, in the church with the Rev. William Runaas Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Kvindherred Cemetery, rural Calamus.
