David R. Flathers, 60, Delmar, Iowa, died Thursday evening, October 21, 2004 at home.

David was born January 15, 1944 in Maquoketa, Iowa, the son of Donald Flathers and Verna (Randolph) Flathers. He married Delores McMahon at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. David previously owned and operated Flathers Land Improvement for over 20 years. He also farmed and currently was employed by the Iowa Department of Transportation.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. David had a great passion for horses.  This past summer he, his wife and grandchildren had the special opportunity to participate in the Iowa Sesquicentennial Caravan ride. He greatly loved his family, grandchildren and his dog, Patches.  His final act of kindness was being an eye donor.   

Surviving are his loving wife of 41 years, Delores; their children, Kimberly Kuchel and her husband, Keith and their children, Jake, Jack and Sadie, Lost Nation; Stephanie Kueter and her husband, Tim, and their children, Trista, Carissa, Joshua and Brianna, DeWitt; Jennifer Anderson and her husband, John and their children, Jessica, Valerie and Allison, DeWitt; Darik Flathers and special friend, Becky Paulsen, Delmar; his mother, Verna Flathers, Thornton, Colorado; brothers and sisters, Robert (Stephanie) Flathers, Aurora, Colorado, and Craig Flathers, Canon City, Colorado; Donna (William) Sweeney, Milan, Illinois; Kathryn Olson, Des Moines, Iowa; Rebecca Sommers, Cynthia (Greg) Wimmer and Mary Flathers, all of Thornton, Colorado; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 2 until 8 p.m. Sunday, October 24, 2004. Parish Vigil Service 7 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 25, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. The Rev. Fr. H. Robert Harness officiating. Interment in the Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Rick Weirup, Paul Watters, Mike Schmidt, Joe Feldpausch, Bruce Telleen, Ben Petty, Tom Maher, Steve Platter and Curt Claeys.
