David Ray Anderson

David Anderson, 65, of LeClaire, formerly of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Friday, August 19, 2016.

Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. The Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 25, 2016, in the funeral home with Pastor Tom Boomershine officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. Memorials may be made to the family for an educational fund to be established for his grandchildren.

David Ray Anderson was born in DeWitt on March 28, 1951, the son of Bruce and Lois (Fatchett) Anderson. He graduated from DeWitt Central High School in 1969. Dave was a member of the track and football teams at DeWitt, excelling in football as a tailback. He had a passion for running and was among the earliest participants in the Bix 7. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and was an avid Hawkeye football and basketball fan. Dave married the love of his life, Debra Birney, on July 26, 1975, at the United Methodist Church in DeWitt. The couple made their home in Davenport where their two children, Sarah and Matt, were born. They later moved to LeClaire on the bluffs of the Mississippi River. Dave loved spending time on the river and especially treasured their family vacations in Birchwood, Wisconsin. Dave attended Northeast Missouri State College and Orange County College in California. He completed an Electronics Engineering degree at Hamilton Technical College. He retired from Cobham Life Support in 2014. Dave adored his grandchildren and loved being a grandfather.

Those left to celebrate Dave's life include his wife, Debra; his children, Sarah (Jeff Hart) of Sherrard, Illinois, and Matt of Davenport; grandchildren Madison and Ella; siblings, Steve (Kathy) Anderson, and Cathy (Jay) Hawthorne; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, David and Betty Birney, Donald and Lynn Birney; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce and Lois Anderson, his in-laws, Dorothy and Harold Birney, his sister-in-law, Christine Birney, and his best friends Dan Weeks and Jim Slack.

The family thanks the health care professionals at the University of Iowa Hospitals and UnityPoint Hospice for their care of Dave. They are especially grateful to all of the family and friends who have kept Dave in prayer during his illness.
