Charles Hudson Rarick, 78, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 14, 2015, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

 

Charlie was born September 9, 1936, in Dover, New Jersey, to Charles J. and Elizabeth (Hudson) Rarick. He graduated from Roxbury High School in Succasunna, New Jersey.  He voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1956 to 1958.  Charlie was united in marriage to Helene George on December 29, 1956, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wharton, New Jersey.  The couple resided in Succasunna where Charlie worked at the Picatinny Arsenal until relocating to DeWitt in 1974. He retired in 1993 as an Ammunition Demilitarization Project Manager at the Rock Island Arsenal.

 

Charlie was a lifelong learner and explored many interests, including woodworking, photography, fishing, and golf.  He served on the Park and Recreation board and in 1983 was instrumental in starting the soccer program in DeWitt. Charlie was an avid fan of Central Saber sports.

 

In addition to his wife, sweetheart, and best friend of 58 years, Helene, Charlie is survived by his children, Beth (Joe) Grell of DeWitt, Colleen (Gerry) Mode of Herlong, California, Chris (Cheryl) Rarick of Belleville, Illinois, and Steve (Sherri) Rarick of DeSoto, Missouri; grandchildren, Brian (Kelly), Eric (Stacy), Adam (Chelsea), Maggie, and Becca Grell, and Amy (Ross) Curtis; Austin and Anna Rarick; Alex, Zachary, Mackenzie, and Mallory Rarick; great-grandchildren, Cael, Brody, Greyson, Maddox, Hailey, Jake, Kara, Greenley, and Hudson Grell; a brother, John of Gainesboro, Tennessee; a brother-in-law, Stephen (Susan) George; a sister-in-law, Stephanie Rarick; nieces and nephews; and his dog Finn.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and a brother, Gary.

 

Visitation will be from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, July 19, 2015, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt.  A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 20, 2015, in the funeral home, with the Rev. Fr. Paul Connolly officiating.  Burial and military rites will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, DeWitt.
