Mr. Charles R. Callahan, 89, of DeWitt, Iowa, died late Friday evening, July 22, 2016, at Country Manor, Davenport.

Charles Raymond Callahan was born December 27, 1926, in Masonville, Iowa, to Lyman Patrick and Grace Helen (McMahon) Callahan.  He was a graduate of Manchester High School.  Chuck served in the Navy during World War II as a machinist and gunner, being stationed in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands.  Following his military service, Chuck became an electrician and became a lineman, progressing into foreman at Iowa Electric Light and Power Company.  He retired in 1983 following 31 years of service.  Chuck was united in marriage to Anna Belle Jaycox on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 1951 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manchester.  The couple resided in DeWitt much of their married life where they raised their family. His wife Anna Belle preceded him in death September 28, 2011.

He was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Eugene McManus American Legion Post #238, DeWitt Volunteer Fire Department and DeWitt Nite Lions.   Chuck was an avid wood worker and loved fishing, camping, boating, puzzles and oddball toys.   He also enjoyed winters spent in Florida, reading the daily newspaper and westerns. 

Surviving are children, Patricia Waack of DeWitt, Daniel (Denise) Callahan of Des Moines, Constance Miller of DeWitt, James (Mary) Callahan of Clinton, Susan (Jeff) Mossage of Aledo, Illinois, Catherine Callahan and Barbara (Larry) Mork of DeWitt, Penelope (Lane Burgess) Callahan of Spokane, Washington; 19 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; a sister, Anne Kehrli of Ryan; a sister-in-law, Dolores Callahan and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Chuck in death in addition to his wife were his parents; an infant son; a son, Michael; a grandson, Jerome William Waack; an infant Grandson Mork; brothers, Leon and John; a sister, Mary Harris; a son-in-law, Warren Waack and brothers-in-law, John Harris and Marcus Kehrli.

Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday, July 25th, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m.  The funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 26th at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt with Rev. Paul Connolly officiating.  Burial and military rites will be at Clinton Lawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Christopher Miller, Jason Mork, Cody Mork, Timothy Callahan, Joseph Callahan, Nicholas Callahan, Matthew Callahan and Anthony Callahan.
