Mr. Kenneth C. Berner, 95, of rural DeWitt, Iowa, died Monday morning, June 11, 2012, in his home.
Kenneth Carl Berner was born July 18, 1916, in Canton, Iowa, to William and Rebecca (Bender) Berner. On June 21, 1939, he was united in marriage to Marian Banthin Hardersen at Zion Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in the Grand Mound and Calamus, Iowa, areas for many years. They moved to rural DeWitt, in 1979 where they have resided since.
He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church, Bliedorn, Iowa, where he served on the church council and building committee. Ken was also a member of Farm Bureau. He enjoyed bowling, boating, camping at Sugar Bottom Campground near Iowa City, Iowa, and playing cards. Ken and Marion spent many winters in Punta Gorda, Florida which they greatly enjoyed.
Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 73 years, Marian; children, Joyce Simmons and her husband, Don of rural DeWitt, Judy Witte of Davenport, Iowa, and Donald Berner and his wife, Marty of Mount Vernon, Iowa; 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth W. and Deborah Berner; a grandson, Brian Berner; brothers, Chris, Laverne, Harold, and William, Jr.; sisters, Viola Goldensoph, Mildred Paulsen, Gladys Andersen and Berniece Berner.
Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2012. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2012 in St. John Lutheran Church, Bliedorn. Burial will be at Clinton Lawn Cemetery.
Grandsons, Kevin Berner, Kenny Berner, Jr., Michael Witte, Dean Pingel, Douglas Berner and Dusty Berner and great-grandsons, Jeffrey Witte, Matt Smith, Jeremy Anderson, Joe Anderson, Jason Anderson, Steven Pingel and Michael Davis will serve as pallbearers.
